The Tobias Gibson Award is named for the first Methodist missionary sent to the Natchez Territory in the Western Conference in 1799, where he served for five years establishing Methodist societies and meeting places as a circuit rider in Mississippi. Award recipients have made significant contributions to the preservation of United Methodist history in the Mississippi Conference in the previous year. The award is sponsored by the Commission on Archives and History.
