Interim Tupelo District Superintendency

Brothers and sisters of the Mississippi Conference,

I shared with you at annual conference session last week that Rev. Rickey Haynes, who was previously announced as the incoming Tupelo District Superintendent, will now be the incoming Senatobia District Superintendent. Rev. Tom Potter, who was announced as the incoming Senatobia District Superintendent, discerned a call to pastor First United Methodist Church of Louisville.

Today I would like to share with you that Rev. Andy Ray and Rev. Dr. Jimmy Barnes will serve in the interim as co-district superintendents of the Tupelo District. Ray has responsibilities as the retired clergy and surviving spouses liaison officer, and Barnes will serve in a full-time leadership role as the pastor of Cornerstone United Methodist Church. Therefore, the duties of district superintendent are being split between Ray and Barnes to ensure that in addition to their other duties, the workload of the district superintendent’s office will be taken care of.

Ray’s primary responsibilities as co-district superintendent will include, but are not limited to:

  • Overseeing day-to-day operations of the district office
  • Managing charge conferences
  • Consulting with clergy and churches
  • Attending cabinet meetings

Barnes’ primary responsibilities as co-district superintendent will include, but are not limited to:

  • Meeting with the board of laity
  • Leading the district operational team (spiritual leadership)

Responsibilities may change as needed throughout the year.

I encourage you to lift up not only these co-laborers as they serve in the Tupelo District, but all clergy persons as some transition to new faith communities and others return ready to continue building the Kingdom where they are.
