Take a ride on the Long Leaf

United Methodist cyclists are already getting in shape for the fourth annual Circuit Ride.

This year’s event is scheduled for 10 a.m. April 25 in Hattiesburg.

The circuit rides were started as a means to mix healthy activity with honoring Methodist preachers who rode horses from town to town in the 1800s.

The journey will take a northerly route from Hattiesburg on the Longleaf Trace (longleaftrace.org). Trail’s end will be back in Hattiesburg at the Longleaf Trace headquarters. Participants choose how far they ride, and rest stations will be provided along the way.

The ride is open to all. Beginners and experienced riders have participated.

Cost to register is $12, including a T-shirt.Participants are asked to register by April 8. Send fees to Circuit Ride 4, Karen Jones,  May & Company, 110 Monument Place, Vicksburg, MS 39180. T-shirt will be distributed at the ride.

In addition, the 2009 Circuit Ride poster will be available for purchase. It was designed by Jerry Plunk and features a tandem bicycle to emphasize the theme “We Never Ride Alone.”

Plunk also designed the 2008 poster, which won two  gold Addys and a Judges Special Award in the 2008 contest sponsored by the Memphis Advertising Association. That design featured a photo of a bicycle taken from above which drew out the cross formed by the handle bars and the body of the bike.
