Oxford-University UMC hosts Tex Sample

Native and prominent theologian Tex Sample led Oxford-University United Methodist Church in its Spiritual Renewal 2008 event Jan. 27-28.

Sample delivered three messages, challenging the church to put into practice the virtues of the Christian faith found in Romans 12:9-18 and emphasizing the significance of community within and outside of the church. In “Practices of Transformation,” Sample spoke of the importance of actively living out the goodness of Christ to achieve real change.

He also encouraged worshippers to “get the story right” by placing our lives into Christ’s story rather than attempting to fit Christ into our own agendas. And in his message “Pitching Tents,” Sample reminded OUUMC to connect with those outside the church by embracing and appreciating the customs and languages of the wider world.

Tex helped me to remember that the main thing is to get out there and do it,” said OUUMC member Tim Tatum. “Get out there and practice your faith! It doesn’t do anybody any good if we just sit in the pews.”
