LUCEDALE — The Rev. Elder Howell Sr., 83, a retired United Methodist pastor, died Nov. 6, 2007.

Services were held Nov. 10 at Refuge United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery. The Revs. Hollis Howell and Greg Ducker officiated. Pallbearers were Elder (Hank) Howell Jr., Sanford (Joe) Howell, Clayton Howell, L.N. Howell Jr., Dale Newman, Matthew Gray and Jerry Wheat. Honorary pallbearers were Mason Howell, Michael Gray, John Paul Gray, John Newman, Andrew Beard and retired pastors. George County Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Rev. Howell was born June 25, 1924, the oldest son of Lou and Hulda Howell. Rev. Howell served in the U.S. Army, Army National Guard and the Army Reserves for 11 years.

Rev. Howell began his career in the Mississippi Conference of The United Methodist Church on Feb. 1, 1963, and served as a pastor until retiring in 1989. He served as a retired supply pastor until 1999. He was ordained a deacon in 1965 and an elder in full connection in June 1970.

Rev. Howell served appointments at Rocky Springs, Carlisle, Lorman, Stringer, Liberty, Summit Johnston Chapel, Walnut Grove, Clara, Morton Independence, Leakesville, Hurley, Shiloh, Mentorum and Maxie.

He was preceded in death by one infant daughter, two infant sons, his parents, sister Julie Anne Howell and brothers Alton Howell, Clemon Howell and Metro Howell.

Survivors include: wife of 60 years Addrianna (Rena) Smith, daughters Charlotte Bear of Asheville, N.C., and Threta Ann Newman of Smithdale, son Elder “Hank” Howell of Bogue Chitto; sisters, Rosella Howell, Estelle Howell, Dorothy Douglas all of Lucedale; brothers Mason “Pistol” Howell, Clayton Howell, Sanford (Joe) Howell, L.N. Howell Jr., all of Lucedale; and eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
