'Disaster' strikes!

A “tornado” recently hit St. Stephen’s United Methodist Church in Yazoo City on Aug. 19. Twenty-six “victims” were treated by emergency personnel. Meanwhile, “lightning” struck the police station.

Didn’t read or hear about it?

That’s because it was a drill. Members of the church agreed to pose as victims of a tornado so that local officials could rehearse responding to a disaster.

Bernice McGinnis, Yazoo County Civil Defense director, called the drill a success. “We had some communication issues and things like that,” she told the Yazoo Herald newspaper, “But that’s why we have these drills. It’s much better to learn in these drills than in an actual event.”
