Jewell Bostick Beam, retired schoolteacher


TREMONT – Jewell Bostick Beam, 93, a retired schoolteacher, died July 23, 2007, at the Graceland Care Center in New Albany where she had been a resident for the past seven years.


A memorial service was held July 25 at Tremont United Methodist Church in Tremont with Dr. Doyce Gunter and Rev. Dalton Brown officiating. Burial was in the Ridge Cemetery in northeast Itawamba County. Pallbearers were Rick Lesley, Robin Thornton, Alan Beam, Jim Beam-Ingram, Bob Beam, Bill Beam and Thomas Beam. Dean Deaton Funeral Home of Red Bay, Ala., handled arrangements.


Mrs. Beam was the mother of the Rev. Jerry Beam and the grandmother of the Rev. Alicia Beam-Ingram, clergy members of the Mississippi Conference of The United Methodist Church.


She was born Feb. 4, 1914, in the Ridge community of northeast Itawamba County to the late Joseph Birk and Flossie Northington Bostick. She married Hulon Thomas Beam in 1938. She was a retired second grade school teacher, having taught in the Itawamba County School System for 35 years, of which 23 were at the Tremont Attendance Center. Education included attending Blue Mountain College and Mississippi State University, where she received her degree in elementary education in 1950.


She was a resident of Tremont until 1999. A lifelong Methodist, she became a member of the Tremont United Methodist Church in 1950, where she was active, including participation in worship, Sunday school and the work of the United Methodist Women. She took pride in cooking, housework, needlework, preparing for family gatherings and in spoiling grandchildren.


Other survivors include her son, Mike Beam of New Albany, and five grandchildren.


Memorials may be sent to the Mississippi United Methodist Foundation for the Hulon T. and Jewell B. Beam Scholarship Fund for Millsaps College or the Tremont United Methodist Church.
