Rev. Dr. Young to speak at Rust commencement


The Rev. Dr. Jerry Young, a 1974 graduate of Rust College, will challenge approximately 140 Rust seniors before Dr. David L. Beckley presents the class of 2007 to receive degrees. 

The 2 p.m. commencement will be held April 29 in the W. A. McMillan Multi-Purpose Center. 

Young is president of the General Missionary Baptist State Convention of Mississippi, Inc. and the second vice president of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc., where he is regional vice president for the Southwest Region and registration director. He earned a Master of Divinity Degree and his Doctor of Ministry Degree from Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson. 

A native of Scott, Young is the pastor of the New Hope Baptist Church in Jackson. He served as pastor of several churches prior to becoming the leader of New Hope in 1980. He is founder and headmaster of the New Hope Christian Pre-School and New Hope Christian Elementary School. 

Also during commencement weekend, the public is invited to attend a concert by the Rust College A’cappella Choir at 7:30 p.m. on April 27 in the James A. Elam Chapel on campus; the Presidential 5K Run and 2K Walk-a-Thon benefiting the David L. Beckley Presidential Scholarship Fund on April 28, with on-site registration beginning at 7 a.m.; and senior consecration at 6:45 p.m. in the Morehouse Auditorium, Doxey Center on Saturday evening. 

At 8 a.m. Sunday, the alumni/senior breakfast will be held in the Shaw Cafeteria, Brown Mass Communications Center.
