Teen wins T-Shirt design contest

Michael Jenkins II, of Byhalia, competed against more than 20,000 youth nationwide to win the National Youth Sports Program (NYSP) T-Shirt competition.

Jenkins, a 17-year old senior at Byhalia High School, signed up for the contest while attending the annual summer sports program at Rust College in Holly Springs.

Jenkins’ design is now the official NYSP logo, and will appear on participant T-Shirts and various NYSP printed material. His design is also featured on the cover of the NYSP 2007 calendar. “It was really unexpected,” said Jenkins. “I just tried to do my best.”

More than 300 youth in Marshall County attended NYSP at Rust last summer, tied with Ole Miss for the highest enrollment in the state.

Rust also received nearly $30,000 in private contributions to help offset its decrease in federal funding. Rust provides each boy and girl between the ages of 10 and 16 with a free medical examination and follow-up, if necessary and at least two free meals daily.

NYSP uses sports instruction and competition as a vehicle to enhance self-esteem, to promote respect for oneself and others, to reinforce the importance of education to one’s future and to promote active, healthy lifestyles. NYSP provides participants with instruction in career and educational opportunities and exposure to the college environment.
