Octavia McCoy, retired teacher


TUPELO — Octavia “Tae” Harris McCoy, 98, died Jan. 15, 2007, at the North Mississippi Medical Center.  

Services were held Jan. 17 at W. E. Pegues Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Hicks officiating. Pallbearers were Tom West, Jim Bert Lauderdale, Herman Homan Jr., Ray Powell and Brooks Vaughn Jr. Honorary pallbearers were members of her Sunday school class at Shannon United Methodist Church and mem-bers of Torn Barnett’s Sunday School Class at St. Luke United Methodist . Church. Burial was in the Shannon Cemetery. 

She was born in Shannon on Feb.17,1908, to the late James Ruben and Rebecca Brown Harris. She was a graduate of Mississippi State College for Women. She taught school in Rayville, La., Eupora, Nettleton and 24 years at Tupelo High School, retiring in 1973. She had lived at Traceway Manor since 1986, the past five years at the Mitchell Center. She was active in the United Methodist Women, Peripatetic Club and the Shannon Women’s Clubs. She was the widow of T.J. McCoy, who preceded her in death on Sept, 9,1948.  

She was a member of Shannon United Methodist Church since 1920 and taught Sunday school for 44 years. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Seal Shannon and Linda Edwards; and five brothers, W.T., Charles, Lamar, James Owen and Humphrey Harris. 

Survivors include: sister, Virginia Oakley of Memphis; 13 nieces and nephews, 23 great nieces and great nephews and 10 ten great-great nieces and nephews.
