Baptism event coming to Tupelo First UMC

Tupelo First United Methodist Church will provide an opportunity for laity and clergy to rediscover and revitalize their understanding of baptism by offering a seminar entitled “Come to the Water.” The event is scheduled for Oct. 8-10.

Dr. Gayle Carlton Felton will be the featured speaker. A United Methodist writer, consultant and lecturer, Felton was previously on the faculty of Duke Divinity School and is a clergy member of the North Carolina Annual Conference. She served on a committee that studied Holy Communion and helped write the denomination’s official interpretative statement on the sacrament.

Felton will provide the sermon at both the 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. worship services on Oct. 8, will speak during the Sunday school hour and from 4-5:15 p.m. and 6-7:15 p.m. on Sunday evening. On Oct. 9, she will speak at noon and at 6 p.m.

On Oct. 10, Felton will conduct a one day study on baptism designed primarily for clergy although lay members may attend. The cost for the Oct. 10 study is $35 with pre-registration required. Course credit of one-half continuing education unit may be earned by clergy members.
