Thomas Murphy Johnson, retired clergy


EQUALITY, Ala. — Thomas Murphy Johnson, 68, a retired United Methodist pastor, died Aug. 12, 2006, at his home. 

Services were held Aug. 15 at Equality United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Nixon officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Radney Funeral Home handled arrangements. 

Rev. Johnson was born on Dec. 12, 1937 in Yazoo City, Miss. to Marlin Fritz Johnson Sr. and Mildred Ann Murphy Johnson.  

He served and retired as a United Methodist minister after 38 years in the ministry. For the past 10 years he held the office of constable in Coosa County. For many years he refereed sports for Little League, high school and college. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and golf. He served in the United States Marine Corps.  

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Marlin Fritz Johnson Jr.  

Survivors include: wife, Gloria F. Johnson of Equality; sons, William Marlin Johnson of Birmingham and Brian Murphy Johnson of Woodstock, Ga.; daughters, Elizabeth Ann Johnson of Birmingham and Katherine Marie Johnson of Smyrna, Ga.; brother, John Wilson Johnson of Crestview, Fla.; sister, Betty Johnson Wentworth of Pickens; and three grandchildren.
