Townsend to aid coast Hispanics


Mary Townsend has joined the Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts as a United Methodist Committee on Relief bilingual, long-term recovery caseworker and assistant for Seashore District Hispanic ministry.


Townsend previously worked eight years in Hispanic ministry in Forest. She has worked as an immigration services provider, a social justice advocate and an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher. She was one of the founding members of MIRA (Mississippi Immigrants Rights Alliance) in Jackson and served on MIRA’s board of directors for several years.


Townsend will serve the Hispanic community of the entire Gulf Coast area. Churches that encounter Hispanic victims of Katrina may refer them to Townsend for long-term recovery assistance. Hispanics who need other types of assistance may also be referred to her office. She will be stationed at Beauvoir United Methodist Church, where she will also work with Rev. Sally Bevill in district Hispanic Ministries. Beauvoir UMC is located at 2113 Pass Road in Biloxi.
