Jackson Water Crisis Update

As I am sure you have already heard, the City of Jackson, Mississippi is in a water emergency situation. Approximately 180,000 residents are struggling to have clean drinking water, and some do not have water at all.

United Methodists of Mississippi are rallying around our neighbors and reaching out to the community in as many ways as we possibly can. The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) has already approved a $10,000 grant for addressing these needs. We are grateful for the outpour of response by the texts, calls and emails that have already been received asking, “How can we help?” These have come in from all across the annual conference and across our United Methodist Connection.

Here is where we are currently:

  1. The city, state and federal government has declared this an emergency which provides more options for assistance.
  2. Jackson Public Schools are not meeting in person, but meals are being provided.
  3. Water is being distributed by the City of Jackson and the schedule can be found on their website.
  4. Local non-profits and churches are coming together to meet the needs of the most vulnerable.

What can you do:

  1. Pray for the leadership to come together for a solution to this situation.
  2. Collect money to be sent to: Connectional Ministries, 320-C Briarwood Drive, Jackson, MS 39206 and put “Jackson Water Crisis” in the memo. This money will be used to purchase water and other items (personal filtration systems, etc.) as we move into the long-term phase of this project.
  3. Bring water to Jackson, serve as a distribution site, help deliver water into needed areas or volunteer to help distribute. Click here to complete a form so that a team of people can reach out to you and coordinate your gifts.
