New Strategy for Superintendence in Greenwood and Hattiesburg Districts

4/28/2022

Greetings brothers and sisters in Christ,

Out of a commitment to transparency, I am excited to share with you what the cabinet and I have discerned as a great opportunity that we believe will lead to beneficial innovation for the Mississippi Conference. Over the last 32 years, the number of churches in the conference has decreased from 1,313 down to 885. The cabinet and I, alongside the Greenwood and Hattiesburg District superintendency committees have agreed to experiment with a new configuration of coverage for the Greenwood and Hattiesburg Districts beginning July 1, 2022.

The hope is that planting these experimental seeds of strategic superintendence will harvest innovative ways to engage in impactful streamlining of administrative and collaborative leadership resources, explore opportunities to strengthen our connection and practice operational stewardship.

The present Greenwood District Superintendent, Rev. Steven “Rusty” Keen, is transitioning to lead pastor of Tupelo First United Methodist Church July 1, 2022. Coverage for the Greenwood District will be led by the following district superintendents: Rev. Dr. Stephen Cook (West Jackson), Rev. Paulette Buford-James (Starkville) and Rev. Rickey Haynes (Senatobia). For a listing of Greenwood churches and charges and their corresponding district superintendent oversight, click here

The present Hattiesburg District Superintendent, Rev. Vicki Baldwin, will return to retirement. Coverage for the Hattiesburg District will be led by the following district superintendents: Rev. Dayna Goff (Meridian), Rev. Dr. Larry Hilliard (Seashore), Rev. Lindsey Robinson (Brookhaven) and Rev. Dr. Connie Shelton (East Jackson). As we embark on this endeavor, we look forward to gaining insights into news ways to connect as The Journey Continues Together.

Blessings,
Bishop James E. Swanson, Sr.
