Ross Named to New Vital Congregations Position at Discipleship Ministries


NASHVILLE, Tenn. April 7, 2015 /Discipleship Ministries/ – The Rev. Vance P. Ross has been named to the new position of director of annual conference relations/annual conference strategist for vital congregations at Discipleship Ministries.

Ross, who is senior pastor of Gordon Memorial United Methodist Church in Nashville, will begin his new assignment on May 11.

“We are excited to have Vance back at Discipleship Ministries,” said Dr. Timothy L. Bias, General Secretary (chief executive) of Discipleship Ministries. “He will direct the work of this agency as we appropriately link to annual conferences to strengthen United Methodist connectional vitality efforts and develop partnerships that focus on the primary task of making disciples of Jesus Christ.”

Ross, who has been pastor at Gordon Memorial since 2011, previously served at Discipleship Ministries as associate general secretary of Leadership Resources and deputy general secretary for External Connectional Relations and Strategic Initiatives.

“I am humbled and honored to join the Discipleship Ministries staff in this new position as part of the department for Vital Congregations,” Ross said. “I look forward to hearing from annual conference leaders as to the particular strengths and challenges discerned in their areas.”

Ross said he anticipates having “strong partnerships and alliances that make for fresh and creative responses.”

“Disciples of Jesus Christ can be used by God to transform communities and the world. I expect God to keep moving us in this direction. I am excited for the opportunity to be a part of it,” he said.

A native of Bluefield, W.V., Ross received a bachelor of arts degree in government/youth service from West Virginia Wesleyan College and graduated with honors from Gammon Theological Seminary.

Ross will work as a deployed staff person living in Atlanta, where his spouse, the Rev. Bridgette Young Ross, is the Dean of the Chapel and Spiritual Life at Emory University.
