Workshop: Creating Momentum Through Effective Leadership Structures

Thursday, November 29, 2018 3:15 PM to 4:45 PM

Geared toward Bishops, Chief Missional Strategists (CMS/DS), Developers, Clergy and Church Leaders

The traditional organizational structure of our churches with an Ad Board, Trustees, SPPRC, Finance committee, and a plethora of other committees can hinder missional alignment, slow down decision making, and work against creating momentum for change. This workshop, which will have something for local church pastors as well as district superintendents and conference staff, will look at a different way to organize congregations called the “one board accountable leadership structure.” This alternative structure creates spiritual leaders who disciple others, helps a church be mission focused, streamlines decision making, and frees people from committee meetings so that more people can use their time in hands on ministry. While many conferences are using this model, Iowa borrowed it from the Missouri Annual Conference as part of our Healthy Church initiative process. Through a series of trials, and some fairly big errors, we have adopted the process to make it our own. In this session we will discuss the difference between a simplified traditional structure and a true single board. We will discuss the challenges a congregation is likely to face, and we will discuss what churches need from conference and district leaders to make single board effective.
