Director of Children’s Ministries

First UMC in Laurel, MS is seeking to fill the position of full time Director of Children Activities.

JOB TITLE:  Director of Children’s Ministries
 
ACCOUNTABLE TO:

  1. Pastor, as Head of Staff, for day-to-day responsibilities.
  2. Staff, with regard to expected attendance at regular weekly scheduled staff meetings, unless alternate arrangements are made with the approval of the Head of Staff and the Staff-Parish Relations Committee (SPRC).
  3. Staff-Parish Relations Committee for employment, continuing employment and performance evaluation.
    1. It will be the policy of the SPRC to conduct at least an annual evaluation.
    2. The SPRC may call for additional evaluations as needed.
    3. The SPRC will counsel with the Head of Staff regarding all evaluations.
 
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Resource the Children’s Ministries.
    1. Develop and grow program ministries in conjunction with the Children’s Department.
    2. Plan meetings as needed.
    3. Work with elected Children’s Coordinator to select appropriate volunteers.
    4. Develop and recommend to Church Council an annual budget.
  2. Oversee the nursery ministry of the church.
    1. Provide oversight, direction and assist in evaluations for paid nursery workers.
    2. Work with the elected Nursery Coordinator to develop and maintain a printed list of “approved” volunteer nursery workers.
    3. Work with the elected Nursery Coordinator to develop a rotation of parents to serve in the nursery at scheduled events when necessary (names to be listed on the “approved” list).
    4. Purchase and stock needed supplies.
    5. Develop and recommend to Church Council an annual budget.
    6. Be on site and available for all Sunday Morning and Wednesday evening nursery needs.
    7. Schedule and maintain a nursery for special church program needs.
  3. Sunday School (ages 2-6th grade):
    1. Secure teachers and regular substitutes for each class.
    2. Order curriculum in consultation with the Head of Staff and Children’s Coordinator.
    3. Purchase and stock necessary supplies.
    4. Be on-site and immediately available in the children’s department during the entire Sunday School hour. 
    5. “Check in” with each class during the Sunday School hour to make sure everything is okay.

  1. Methodist Kids:
    1. Develop curriculum and support materials in consultation with the Head of Staff and Children’s Coordinator.
    2. Secure teachers and regular substitutes for each class and learning module.
    3. Purchase and stock necessary supplies.
    4. Be on site and immediately available during Methodist Kids.
    5. Monitor children’s movements between activities.
    6. Stay with the last child until parents resume responsibilities.
  2. Vacation Bible School:
    1. Serve on and provide leadership for the coordinating team between FUMC and other downtown churches.
    2. Secure teachers and other volunteers.
    3. Supply materials and resources as needed.
    4. Be on-site and available each day of VBS.
  3. Children’s Choir:
    1. Work with the Director of Music to secure a teacher, accompanist, and support volunteers.
    2. Coordinate with the Head of Staff and Director of Music regarding inclusion in the worship services.
  4. Children’s Moments:
    1. Prepare worship bags for each child for each Sunday morning worship service.
    2. Provide offering can for children’s offering to a mission to be directed by the Head of Staff and Director of Children’s Ministries.
    3. Promote missions in children’s department through offering updates, posters, and bulletin boards.
    4. Substitute for pastor during Children’s moments when necessary.
  5. Acolytes:
    1. Schedule an acolyte training event each year and assist pastor in that event.
    2. Make a quarterly schedule of acolytes for both morning worship services.
    3. Email and/or mail monthly schedule to parents of acolytes in advance.
    4. Secure substitutes when necessary.
  6. Confirmation:
    1. Assist Pastor and Youth Director in planning and preparing for annual confirmation classes, retreats, and professions of faith.
    2. Teach classes as assigned by the pastor, if required.
    3. Attend and assist in leading the confirmation retreat, if required.
    4. Assist in the confirmation service each year.
  7. Special initiatives:
    1. Develop, resource, and implement children’s Christmas, Easter, and other holiday programs in conjunction with the children’s department.
