Day 30 - Pauses for Lent - Money

4/9/2019

Money

“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and in their eagerness to be rich some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pains.”  1 Timothy 6:10 NRSV

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”  Matthew 6:21 NRSV

“No one can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.”  Matthew 6:24 NRSV

Money can be used as a blessing, and money can be used as a curse. It matters what role money plays in your life.   Money is a tool for provision and blessings.   However, you can allow the love of money to make a tool out of you.  Greed is the mistress and master of our souls when we allow the love of money to rule in our hearts.  Remember, my sisters and brothers, it is the love of money that corrupts; money is an object until we give it power.

In the 1970’s a rhythm and blues music group, known as The O’Jays, put to pen these lyrics from their classic hit, “For the Love of Money”:

Don't let, don't let, don't let money rule you
For the love of money
Money can change people sometimes
Don't let, don't let, don't let money fool you
Money can fool people sometimes
People! Don't let money, don't let money change you,
It will keep on changing, changing up your mind.

Lord, teach us to bless others with the money you have so graciously blessed us. Bless us to be a blessing!  Amen
