St. James United Methodist Church recently received a grant from the Mississippi Revitalization Committee to assist this historic church in continuing its ministry in the Columbus area and around the world.

Starkville District superintendent Dr. Embra Jackson was excited about the grant, totaling over $13,000 for St. James UMC ministries. The grant is to be used to help the church construct an electronic sign that will assist with publicizing the church and its many outreach ministries, including their hot dog ministry, food pantry, clothes closet and evangelical community outreach.

"I am so very pleased and excited that St. James United Methodist Church in Columbus has received this grant from the Mississippi Annual Conference Revitalization Committee to assist them in expanding their ministry to their local community," Jackson said.

The St. James church has been an anchor in the Columbus community since 1870. As an anchor church, St. James has been involved in assisting the needs of many people in the community and around the world through providing a haven where physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs are being met.

St. James has been led by great spiritual leaders, (both lay and clergy) who have been instrumental in this church becoming a place where the word of God is not only preached on Sunday, but where the love of God is shown to all persons. The church is currently engaged in many outreach ministries providing much needed help to the youth, and senior citizens in the area.

The funds for this grant were made possible through contributions from the local churches to the annual conference Mission Fair Shares (apportionments). Jackson said "we strongly encourage each church to
pay their Mission Fair shares so that we can continue to see the ministry of The United Methodist Church at work in the world and in our local communities!"
