Wesley United Methodist Church in Greenwood recently sponsored its annual Community Health and Wellness Day. Over 200 flyers were passed out in the neighborhood and at the Snowden Jones Apartment Complex during the week before the event. The day of the event the area was canvassed as a reminder about the event and to personally invite the community to attend the health and wellness event by students from the Social Work Department at Mississippi Valley State University. The purpose of the health and wellness day includes three elements:
• To provide educational outreach to address the challenging medical issues that threaten the residents in our community
• To provide health checks that can be used as a first measure of identifying health problems early and make recommendations to participants for follow-up care with their primary health care providers
• To get the community engaged in healthy living by providing fun activities for the entire family
The Community Health and Wellness Day events served adults and children from the Howard Street community and those from other communities in Greenwood, Mississippi. The event served approximately 75 documented participants. The activities included:
• Health screenings (blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetic checks)
• Health education and literature
• DJ playing Christian music
