MS United Methodist Urged to Participate in Flood Bucket Drive

The Mississippi Conference of the United Methodist Church isundertaking a flood bucket (cleaning bucket) drive to replenish the supply at United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) depots. The conference is providing 1,200 empty buckets with lids to facilitate this endeavor. These buckets can be picked up at various locations in the districts. The district office or district disaster response coordinator can assist churches and individuals in finding the pickup location.

The buckets need to be returned filled or empty by the third week of November. Because the buckets have become costly there is a $5 charge for every bucket which is not returned. The filled buckets will be picked up and shipped to Sager Brown in Baldwin, Louisiana, where they will be housed and shipped out as needed all over the world. A check for $3.00 made payable to the Mississippi Conference Disaster Preparedness fund is requested with each filled bucket.  Please total your buckets and send one check for the total amount to the conference office. This fee will assist in the pick-up and delivery of the filled buckets. Half of this money will accompany the filled buckets to Sager Brown and half will help to defray the cost of getting them there.

Churches, church groups and clusters are encouraged to make an event of this. Perhaps making a scavenger hunt out of finding the best price for the materials to fill the buckets can be great fun. Many of the dollar stores are great resources for locating the items to fill the buckets. Please share any discoveries of cost saving measures others might employ in their bucket drive. The list of required items and the sizes are found on the UMCOR web site.

The recent typhoon and the floods out in Colorado are just part of the need for these resources. The Mississippi Conference knows well what it is like to need and also how it feels to see help coming. It is the hope of the Mississippi United Methodists Church that members will not only engage in this opportunity but will go above and beyond as to assist those in need.
