5th Anniversary Worship Resources

“We live in a place where the church is significant.
We see a renewed faith of what we can do as a church
and what the body
of Christ looks like. We see a lot of
positive things…hope never lets us down.
Even the volunteers seem to go back home with
renewed hope."
--Rev. David Cumbest, June 2007

On August 29th, 2005, Hurricane Katrina made landfall devastating the landscape and livelihood of all who live on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Immediately, United Methodist from across the connection began healing hearts and homes. Today, our hearts continue to be touched by your sincerity and desire to be the church in our community.

On Sunday, August 29, 2010, the 5th Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, we reflect upon your graciousness toward us as we lift up our hearts in Thanksgiving for this gift God has given us. To do this we have prepared several tools for use in worship. On this page you will find the following:

Some Mississippi United Methodist Katrina Recovery Statistics: Since August 29, 2005

Over 160,000 volunteers have worked on over 12,000 homes and built over 100 new homes, saving over $100 million in labor cost to struggling Mississippi Gulf Coast homeowners.

Today, the three permanent camps/warehouses are completely built and housing volunteers and supplies for rebuilding homes.  Located in Jackson, Harrison and Hancock counties the camps are simply named Camp Hope, Camp Love and Camp Faith. These disaster response camps will be there for future use after Katrina Recovery is complete.

MS UM Katrina Recovery will be healing hearts and homes into 2012.

Mississippi United Methodist Katrina Recovery is headquartered in historic Van Hook Hall on the campus of Seashore United Methodist Assembly, Beach Blvd., Biloxi. One of few remaining beachfront historic buildings left undamaged by Hurricane Katrina in Biloxi.
