O For A Thousand

Dear Mississippi United Methodists,

Greetings to you in the name of our Lord Jesus!

My name is John Moore. I am chairing the Pre-1982 Pension Task Force for the Mississippi Conference. A few weeks ago at Annual Conference I made a presentation in the Saturday afternoon plenary in regard to funding for our Pre-1982 Clergy Pensions.

I hope you will take a few moments to read the enclosed brochure describing our situation with Pre-’82 pension funding. The Task Force is seeking to be pro-active in our efforts to ensure our clergy, clergy spouses and surviving clergy spouses who are already retired receive the retirement they were promised by us Mississippi United Methodists.

We need for you to assist us in telling this story in your local congregation and/or charge. During Pastor Appreciation month in October, all of us together will try to raise $1,000 from 1,000 churches and /or individuals. I have had some to say it can’t be done. I have had just as many to say that it is worth the effort to say “thank you” to our retirees.

The plan is simple:  Talk with your pastor and church lay leader to ask for their support in joining our effort. At the end of October ask you church treasurer to remit you “free will offering” from your church(es) to our Conference Treasurer at P.O. Box 1201, Jackson, MS 39215.

If a particular clergy and spouse or surviving clergy spouse is being remembered or honored with you church’s offering, please assist us by acknowledging yours and our thanks to the donors. If you will name the person remembered or honored, we will send a certificate to them acknowledging your gift for them has been received.

Thank you for helping,

John C. Moore, Chair
Pre-1982 Pension Task Force
