A letter dated April 25, 2013, authored by Myrlie Evers -- widow of Medgar Evers -- circulated inviting faith leaders in Mississippi and around the world to join in the launch of the Inaugural Medgar Evers Sunday, June 9, 2013. On this day, they are being asked to remember Medgar Evers, the slain civil rights activist, by celebrating his legacy and sharing a message of 'Unity and Faith.' In the letter his widow writes:
"It has been 50 years since Medgar Wiley Evers was taken from us. While many of his contemporaries know and remember him as a civil rights martyr, countless others do not know his full contributions to our nation and to the world. It is only fitting that we honor his legacy as we educate the world that Medgar Evers was a visionary: a servant leader, a soldier, a citizen and an American Hero."
Once the leaders have relayed the message, Evers wants them to visit a special website and enter information that will note their participation in this day of 'Unity and Faith.' The special website address is www.MEdayofjusticeandservice.org. Click on Medgar Evers Sunday for more information.
Bishop James E. Swanson, Sr. of the Mississippi Conference of the United Methodist Church is supporting the effort.
"I strongly encourage 1,100 churches of the Mississippi Conference of the United Methodist Church to join with the Medgar and Myrlie Evers Institute in celebrating a message of Unity and Faith on Sunday, June 9, 2013," said Swanson.
The Medgar and Myrlie Evers Institute have planned several 50th anniversary commemorative activities in Washington, D.C. and in Jackson, Miss.
The institute is also launching the Inaugural Medgar Evers Day of Justice and Service, Saturday, June 8, 2013. For this event, individuals and organizations are asked to implement volunteer service projects throughout their communities around the world and post their contribution and photos on the special website as well. Pictures received by 8:00 p.m. (CST) Sunday, June 9, will be included in a video presentation that will be played during the Medgar Evers Black Tie Tribute Gala on Wednesday, June 12, 2013.
