Pastors’ School registration now open

From time to time, all of us benefit from taking a fresh look at the “tools of our trade”— the resources and methods we use to fulfill our calling.

Pastors’ School ’09, scheduled for Sept. 14-16 at Crossgates United Methodist Church in Brandon, will focus on the Bible, the primary source for preaching and teaching. The event is open to both clergy and laity. For registration information, click here.

Alan Storey, a pastor in the Methodist Church of Southern Africa, will lead participants through the biblical story with the theme “Manna and Mercy.”Storey is known within and beyond South Africa for his engaging manner of teaching and his gift for inviting others to dive more deeply into their spiritual lives. He offers space in which church leaders may find personal renewal as well as insight for the practice of ministry.

Under Storey’s pastoral leadership, congregations have grown in both size and ministry. The Calvary congregation, which he served for 11 years, has been instrumental in opening five pre-schools and one adult education center for dwellers in surrounding shanty towns. Storey has built bridges between the churched and the unchurched, the wealthy and the impoverished, refugees and residents.

Lisa Allen, assistant professor of music and worship at the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, will guide worship throughout the event. Allen, a Jackson native, is a musician and worship leader and is a member of the North Georgia Annual Conference. Bishop Hope Morgan Ward will preach at opening worship on Monday afternoon and Storey will preach at the closing communion service on Wednesday morning.

This year’s Pastors’ School also includes time on Tuesday afternoon for gatherings of the orders of Deacon and Elder and the Fellowship of Local Pastors. These sessions are intended to:

• Strengthen our connection with each other
• Allow time for reflection on the implications of the event’s theme for our unique calls to ministry as deacons, elders, and local pastors

Pastors’ School is offered annually by the Board of Ordained Ministry and the Center for Ministry. One CEU will be awarded for full participation.
