Lake Junaluska to celebrate English pastor

“Offer Them Christ” is the theme for two special worship services will be held to celebrate Dr. Reginald Mallett’s 44 years of preaching ministry at Lake Junaluska Conference and Retreat Center.

The events are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 6 in the Harrell Center and 7:30 p.m. Aug. 9 in Stuart Auditorium. The services will also feature Dr. Glenn Draper and the Junaluska Singers. Mallet has indicated that 2009 will probably be the last year that he and Brenda will be coming to the States from England.

There is no registration fee, but a free will offerings will be received to cover expenses. Participants are responsible for their own housing reservations by calling 1-800-222-4930. The celebration is being promoted and sponsored by the “Junaluskans,” the Junaluska Associates the Foundation for Evangelism, and the World Methodist Council.

Sandwiched between the worship experiences is the Junaluska Associates Weekend, which closes with Mallett preaching at the 10:55 a.m. at the Aug. 9 morning worship service in Stuart Auditorium. Persons are welcomed and encouraged to register for the Associates Weekend program, which begins Friday evening, 7:30 p.m., with two the Bailey Mountain Cloggers and Balsam Range Band, highlighting a program of Southern Appalachian and Blue Ridge culture music and folk dancing traditions. 

Saturday’s program begins at 10 a.m. in Harrell Center with the Malletts sharing their mutual journey of more than 50 years, as a physician and Methodist pastor in England and time spent in preaching in America. In the afternoon, participants have to option of playing in a golf tournament or participating in one of several special interest opportunities. Saturday evening includes the Annual Associates Dinner at 6 p.m., which precedes the Junaluska Singers Concert at 7:30 p.m. This will be their last summer concert directed by Draper, who is retiring as the director of the Singers at the close of the year.

 In addition, Mallett will be the featured speaker at the Older Adult Gathering Aug. 10-13, and preaching at the Western North Carolina Conference Gathering of the Laity Aug. 14-16. He will preach at their closing worship service in Stuart Auditorium on Aug. 16.
