“Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting light. . .”
As Advent candles glow, our prayers arise, "Come, Lord Jesus."
Across Mississippi, United Methodist Community Centers are places of compassion, generosity and engaging ministry. Through these centers, we are all in mission with children, families, elders and others in particular need. Through this work, everlasting light shines.
The Cabinet and I invite each of the 1,145 United Methodist Churches in Mississippi to receive a 2008 Christmas Offering for the community centers. As you invite this offering in your local church, point your congregation to the mission center closest to you and interpret the faithful, persevering, servant work there. Please remit your Christmas offering to the conference treasurer at the end of December for distribution to the community centers.
The Mississippi Conference Advent Calendar, available from the conference web site, highlights again this year the ministry of community centers and is a good resource for your local church.
As we approach the mystery of the Incarnation, let us draw near again to the places where we see the face of Christ in our neighbors in need.
May the power of the Holy Spirit be with you in this effort and throughout this radiant season.
O holy child of Bethlehem, descend to us we pray,
Cast out our sin and enter in, be born in us today.
We hear the Christmas angels, the great glad tidings tell,
O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel.
