BYHALIA — Terry Eugene Sawyer, 57, a city alderman, died July 29, 2008 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis after a short illness.
Funeral services were held Aug. 2 at the Flame at Byhalia United Methodist Church with Dr. Jim Biedenharn officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Byhalia Lions Club. Holly Springs Funeral Home handled arrangements.
Mr. Sawyer was born Sept. 20, 1950 in Memphis. He was a member of Byhalia UMC where he served as teacher of the Upper Room Sunday School class for 22 years. He was a past chair of the Administrative Board and present chair of the Staff/Pastor Parish Committee. Mr. Sawyer was the keyboardist and a vocalist with the Byhalia UMC praise band Prayznmor.
Mr. Sawyer was serving as an alderman for the town of Byhalia and was an active member of the Byhalia Area Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Byhalia Lions Club and had been club treasurer for the last 14 years. He also served on the board of directors at Marshall Academy in Holly Springs. He was supporter of school sports including the Byhalia Sports Association.
Mr. Sawyer was a corporate trainer with Mercedes-Benz USA and a graduate of the University of Alabama. During the 1970s Terry played keyboard for several Memphis garage bands including Target and The Shortcuts. He was a donor to the Mid-South Transplant Foundation.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred (Buz) Sawyer and Maxine Trainor Sawyer of Olive Branch.
Survivors include: his wife, Sarah Fay Crain Sawyer of Byhalia; sons, Scott Paul Sawyer and Anderson Callahan Sawyer, both of Byhalia; sister Deborah Strickland of Drummonds, Tenn.; and brothers Chris Sawyer of Brentwood, Tenn., and Tom Sawyer of Newport Coast, Calif.
