St. Matthew's UMC offers marriage-enrichment event

Special to the Advocate

Couples are invited to do some “Cruzin’ on the Rez” thanks to Madison St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church.

The event begins at 6:30 p.m.  July 27. The church’s marriage ministry has chartered the Friendship II boat on the Ross Barnett Reservoir for a night of sailing under the stars, while strengthening marriages. The cost is $35 per couple, which includes childcare.

“We planned Cruzin’ on the Rez to be a time of relaxation and fellowship for busy couples,” said Su Morris, a member of the marriage ministry team and organizer of the event. “We encourage couples to come out and be a part of this special evening.”

In addition, the marriage ministry is initiating a marriage-enrichment series called “10 Great Dates” beginning in September. This series will offer a monthly date night with childcare provided. At the beginning of the evening, a couple from the marriage ministry team will welcome attendees and present a 15-minute marriage-strengthening video, which will cover such subjects as better communication, conflict resolution, balancing roles as partner and parent and developing spiritual intimacy. At the end of the video, couples leave to enjoy dinner with conversation about the topic introduced in the video.

“Our goal is to provide an enjoyable evening out for couples, while also working to build healthier marriages,” said Carol Lukens, who is coordinating the program. “So often, couples get caught up in taking care of the kids, handling their finances and worrying about their careers, and they don’t put their marriage as a top priority. We hope this program will change that.”

The “10 Great Dates” series was created by Marriage Alive, a non-profit marriage and family educational organization dedicated to providing resources and training to help congregations and community groups build better marriages and families. The series has been successful in many communities throughout the nation.

Advance reservations for Cruzin’ on the Rez are required by July 21. Reservations are also required for “10 Great Dates.” To sign up, or for information, contact Morris at 601-942-8235 or Lukens at 601-790-4784.
