East Jackson District schedules Lay Speaking Ministries school

2/6/2008

The East Jackson District plans a Lay Speaking Ministries School at Brandon First United Methodist Church.

The event is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. Feb. 16. Registration fee is $30, which includes study books, snacks and lunch.

The school will consist of three classes taught by ministers from the East Jackson District. The Rev. Giles Lindley will teach the basic course. The basic course is required for Lay Speaking certification and focuses on the many ways lay speakers are called to be in ministry through preaching, leading, teaching, serving and growing through personal spiritual formation.

The Rev. Elbrist Mason will teach “You Can Lead in Evangelism.” This study helps the participants learn how to share their faith by telling and doing. This advanced course helps lay speakers see themselves as Christians with a vital faith to share with others.

The Rev. Gary Knight will lead “Lay Speakers Interpret to Others Our United Methodist Heritage.” This is an advanced course that helps the lay speaker gain an understanding of the distinctive traditions and emphases of The United Methodist Church.
