Abounding in hope

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” — Romans 15:13

The cabinet worked on the coast Nov. 29-30 at St. Rock United Methodist Church and on a home in Biloxi. We stayed at Seashore Assembly, along with a team from Rocky Mount, N.C. On Friday morning, one of the team members from Rocky Mount led morning devotions. She likened our presence and work to the incarnation of Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh. By being present, it was our hope that we might embody the love of God and be a channel of blessing.

As she prayed for our departure for work, she said, “Lord, send others here.”

Yes, Lord, send others to continue the effort, to complete the work. It was a lovely and appropriate prayer. In the prayer we find ourselves, a confident and hopeful people. Our limited contributions are essential in the expansive purpose of God. We abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Advent is the season of confident expectation. May we welcome one another, just as Christ has welcomed us. May our generosity overflow as we sense God’s great generosity to us. And may we be overwhelmed by hope, peace, love and joy as we await the coming of Jesus Christ.
