Deck the halls on the Mississippi Gulf Coast

12/4/2007

Since Hurricane Katrina hit the Mississippi Coast more than two years ago, Mississippi United Methodist Katrina Recovery has re-built or repaired 594 homes.

However, many residents of the coast face their third Christmas dealing with storm damage. They can’t deck the halls, because they don’t have halls.

United Methodists can continue helping their neighbors this Christmas by providing some of the cost of rebuilding a home. This list represents the package price for a 1,300 square-foot, three-bedroom, two-bath home. It represents material only. Labor comes from United Methodist volunteers. The costs:

• $20 - Door lockset with deadbolt

• $50 - 10 sheets of Sheetrock

• $80 - Interior door unit

• $85 - Vapor barrier/house wrap

• $125 - Exterior door

• $350 - Wall insulation package

• $675 - Ceiling insulation package, paint package or window package

• $800 - Exterior siding package

• $1,000 - Roof package

• $1,800 - Flooring package

• $2,500 - Kitchen cabinets and tops

• $7,000 - Lift for elevated property

• $8,000 - Elevated foundation

• $55,000 - Approximate turnkey cost from the ground up, including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, etc.
