Horn Lake UMC receives award for aiding family
A church’s effort to care for and support the family of a soldier deployed in Iraq has earned the church a special honor.
Horn Lake United Methodist Church was named the Small Membership Church of the Year in the Senatobia District. The award was presented Aug. 14 to the Rev. Ray Owens at the district’s clergy gathering.
Sgt. David Meacham and Owens have stayed in contact during his deployment. Owens referred Meacham to Cheryl Denley of the district program staff. They, too, kept up the correspondence.
Throughout their e-mail conversations, Meacham shared with Denley that just after Hurricane Katrina, Meacham and his wife found a church home at Horn Lake United Methodist Church. Meacham explained that he and his wife Stephanie were welcomed into Horn Lake UMC as if they had been a part of the congregation their entire lives. He praised the church folks for helping his wife Stephanie Meacham. Two months prior to her husband’s deployment, Stephanie Meacham gave birth to twin boys.
Horn Lake UMC began caring for Stephanie Meacham and the boys from the moment David Meacham left for Iraq. Owns has made sure e-mails have kept David Meacham abreast of what was going on at home with his wife and boys. Owens also made sure CDs of the Horn Lake and Hinds Chapel UMC services were sent each week to David Meacham.
Also attending the presentation were Bob Meacham, David Meacham’s father. Bob and Carolyn Meacham are members of Senatobia First UMC.
