Vanilla D. Johnson, clergy spouse


MOSS POINT – Vanilla Davis Johnson, 89, a clergy spouse, died July 17, 2007.


Funeral services were held July 21 at St. Paul United Methodist Church. The eulogy was delivered by Rev. Elijah Henry Sr. Interment was at Macphelah Cemetery in Pascagoula. Arrangements were handled by Robinson’s Friendly Funeral Home.


Mrs. Johnson was born Jan. 12, 1918, in Raymond to Charlie and Amy Bracey Davis. As a young girl she moved with her family to Jackson where she graduated from the public school system in 1936.


The next year she met and married the Rev. Dr. Allen Levi Johnson Sr., to whom she was wed until his death in 1992. They had seven children. Mrs. Johnson followed her husband and his Methodist ministry through Michigan, Arizona and Mississippi until his retirement in 1987 from St. Paul United Methodist Church.


She was preceded in death by her husband, grandson Eric Jimill, daughter Marcia Crawford and eight siblings.


Survivors include: daughters, Allean Johnson of San Diego, Sandra Griffith of Davenport, Iowa, and Glenda Johnson and Linda Johnson Haydel, both of Moss Point; sons Allen Johnson Jr. of Jackson and Nathaniel Johnson of Rockville, Md., brother, Roosevelt Davis; and eight grandchildren and one great-grandson.
