Bible scholar to present lectures at Columbus First UMC

Bible scholar Dr. Ben Witherington III will present a lecture series at Columbus First United Methodist Church in September. The lectures are scheduled for Sept. 8-9. 

Witherington is professor of New Testament interpretation at Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Ky. He is considered one of the top evangelical scholars in the world and is an elected member of the prestigious Society of New Testament Studies. 

Witherington has also taught at Ashland Theological Seminary, Vanderbilt University, Duke Divinity School and Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in England. A popular lecturer, Witherington has presented seminars for churches, colleges and biblical meetings around the world. He will be returning to the United States from Hong Kong the weekend before he comes to Mississippi. He has also led tours to Italy, Greece, Turkey, Israel, Jordan and Egypt. 

Witherington has written more than 30 books, including The Jesus Quest and The Paul Quest, both of which were selected as top biblical studies works by Christianity Today. 

He also writes for many church and scholarly publications, and is a frequent contributor to the Beliefnet Web site. 

On Sept. 8, Witherington will speak on “Gleanings from the Gospel of John.” The lecture begins at 9 a.m. in the Fletcher-Jones Building of First UMC. Lunch will be served at the break, and reservations are appreciated. This study will award continuing education units to the clergy (and laity who request it) with a CEU charge of $35 to include lunch. He will speak at the morning worship service on Sept. 9.
