Pleasant Valley UMC struggles to overcome hurricane damage

7/3/2007

Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church in Heidelberg is the only United Methodist church in the Hattiesburg District destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.

At first the congregation met anywhere it could find space. The members eventually were able to rent a vacant church building. However, that arrangement ended in June.

Pleasant Valley settled with its insurance company for $35,000 on the building, but $30,000 was owed on the mortgage.

The old building has been removed, but the lot needs to be completely cleaned off and dirt work completed to get ready for a new foundation. The congregation is trying to secure resources to build a new building. Every second Sunday the members hold a singing program with preaching and are taking up love offerings to raise money.

The Rev. Jim McRee is in charge of the rebuilding efforts. The Rev. A.J. Murray is church pastor.
