BRI will create reading camps in 12 locations around
The camps will be in
The institute will place qualified teachers at each camp, train volunteers and provide books, materials and transportation for the children. Congregations for Children is seeking 10-12 volunteers for each site. The main role of volunteers will be to encourage children to read and support them in their efforts.
“The Barksdale Reading Institute works very hard over the course of the school year to get children reading at grade level before their departure from third grade. The greatest challenge is addressing the lapse that occurs while the students are out of school in the summer,” said Cassandra Welchlin,
Congregations for Children liaison. “CFC is overjoyed to help BRI close this gap.”

Congregations for Children is an interfaith effort launched by the Episcopal, Roman Catholic and United Methodist churches in Mississippi, open to partnership with all others who sense a calling to love, celebrate and advocate for children.
