Mary L. Blain Gordon, clergy spouse


STARKVILLE — Mary Lee Blain Gordon, 81, died April 12, 2007, at Oktibbeha County Hospital.


A family graveside service was held April 13 at Mount Zion Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Choctaw County. A memorial service was held April 15 at First United Methodist Church in Starkville. The Rev. Dr. Danny Rowland, the Rev. Stacy Parvin and the Rev. Jason Franklin officiated the service. Welch Funeral Home of Starkville handled arrangements.


Mrs. Gordon was the spouse of the Rev. Dr. Prentiss Gordon of Starkville, a retired clergy member of the Mississippi Conference of The United Methodist Church, and the mother of the Rev. Dr. Prentiss M. Gordon Jr. of Columbus, also a clergy member of the Mississippi Conference.


Mrs. Gordon stayed at home and reared her children and then went to college and received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees. She taught special education 20 years in the Starkville and Tupelo schools. She defined the role of being a preacher’s wife as being a good wife to the preacher first; then, a good “preacher’s wife.”


Other survivors include: daughters, Peggy Gordon White of Amory and Sandra Gordon Eastman of Starkville; son, Dr. Stephen B. Gordon of Arlington, Va.; and 10 grandchildren.
