Pre-registration deadline is Aug. 25. To register, complete a registration form and return with payment to Lay Speaking Schools, P.O. Box 1147, Jackson, MS 39215. Fees are $75 if you need lodging or $55 for commuters. Meals and textbooks are included in the fee. Make checks payable to Mississippi Conference. Registration forms are available online or from the conference and district offices.

“Training for leadership in the church is a vital area of Lay Speaking Ministries and is very helpful in work in Sunday school, church councils, United Methodist Women, United Methodist Men, United Methodist Youth Fellowship, music and worship. Each person has a place to serve in the local church,” said Ford, conference director of Lay Speaking Ministries.

The basic course is the first step in Lay Speaking Ministries. It provides a broad theological base and introduces basic skills for communicating, caring and leading. Completing the basic course and one advanced course is necessary to become a Certified Lay Speaker. Once certified, completing an advanced course at least once every three years is necessary to retain certification.
