Letter to the Editor: Church needs spirit of Christ

In the July 5 edition of the Mississippi United Methodist Advocate, Glenn Martin asks the question, "What has happened to our church?" Martin is concerned with recent history, but, if we go back near the very beginning of Christianity, we discover that the church lost what many feel was the true spirit of Christ.

For the first few hundred years after Jesus, Christians took seriously his admonition to "love your enemies, do good to those who hate you," etc. After Constantine, the church dropped the non-violent aspect of his teachings and adopted the concept of the just war.

Perhaps we would lose even more ground, but many of us believe that it would resemble more closely what the church should be if we recovered the spirit of the early church.
