Oak Grove UMC welcomes 13 confirmed members

Oak Grove United Methodist Church in Hattiesburg recently welcomed 13 new members through its “Claim the Name” confirmation class.

During the 10-week program, the sixth and seventh graders met weekly with adult mentors for study sessions. The class hosted a food drive for the Edwards Street Fellowship Center food pantry. The children inventoried and shelved the collected food items, and then were led on a tour of the Edwards Street facility by board Chairperson Dr. Iva Brown.

The confirmation class held a bake sale to raise funds for children’s ministries on the Gulf Coast. A portion of the funds were used for a Palm Sunday celebration for the children of Long Beach UMC The Sunday school hour celebration, hosted by the Oak Grove confirmation class in the Long Beach UMC Activities Center, included game booths such as “Go Fishing” and a “Scripture Memory Game” as well as face decals and other activities. The class then worshipped with the Long Beach congregation for Palm Sunday. Bake sale proceeds were also used to make a $250 gift to the children’s ministries of Safe Harbor UMC in Moss Point.

Confirmation Sunday included a celebration brunch for the confirmands, their families and their mentors. Mark Anderson is pastor of Oak Grove UMC.
