The Society of St. Andrew has the opportunity to glean about 80,000 lbs. of cabbage at Eubanks Produce Farm in Lucedale from June 1-10. Surrounding communities and churches are encouraged to help salvage this produce so that those who are hungry will have something nutritious to eat.
All ages are invited to participate. "There will be something for everyone to do," said Jessica Burks, program coordinator for SoSA's Mississippi Gleaning Network. "We will have a packing shed for elderly people to help in and fields for the young and able-bodied." Burks also encouraged gleaners with trucks and trailers to bring them to help with loading and unloading.
Throughout the summer SoSA is planning additional gleaning events at the Eubanks farm and in other areas.
If you have any questions or would like to call and set up a time to glean, please contact Burks at 662.263.8648 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the SoSA office in Mathiston or e-mail her at email@example.com.
National Hunger Awareness Day
This opportunity to glean coincides with National Hunger Awareness Day, June 6. Hunger organizations across the country, including SoSA, will conduct activities in local communities to bring attention to the solvable problem of hunger in America; 38 million Americans aren't sure from where they will get their next meal.
