Sample set for May workshop on race

Nationally known Christian theologian and Brookhaven native Dr. Tex Sample will lead the May 13 Journey Toward the Light: Conversations on Race.

The theme of the workshop is “The Common Good.” Galloway Memorial United Methodist Church in Jackson will host the event at 10 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall.

The Commission on Religion and Race and Bishop Hope Morgan Ward are offering the workshop to churches and individuals, lay and clergy who want to intentionally grow in fellowship and love in the area of race relations. The emphasis of Journey Toward the Light is moving to local churches becoming Light Partners. Through Light Partners local churches or core groups within a church agree to practice four spiritual disciplines:  study,  worship, prayer and action.

From his experience as professor of church and society and his current research on racial-ethnic lifestyles and realities of class, Sample will lay a theological foundation and give practical help to local churches in getting started in the four areas of spiritual growth.

Lunch will be served at Galloway for $8. To indicate the approximate number of participants, please notify Laura Ranger at 1-888-647-7486 or by May 10.
