Sanford to lead youth during summer months

Three changes have been made to the Mississippi Conference staff.

John Moore, director of Connectional Ministries has announced that Eric Sanford of Starkville has been chosen to serve as a summer intern in youth ministry. In addition, Susan Weill has joined the Ministerial Services staff and Haley Smith has returned to the conference treasurer’s staff.

Sanford, a seminary student at Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta, will have administrative and coordinating responsibilities for summer events planned by the conference Youth Council.

Sanford is scheduled to begin his duties May 15 and will serve through Aug. 13.

Sanford spent last summer in his home state as a ministry intern. “He expressed interest to coming back for another type of internship in the Annual Conference,” Moore said. “Given that we have not been able to settle on a permanent staff person in youth ministry, we turned to Eric.

“It is a setting and area of ministry that attracted him. He is also a product of our youth ministry in the Mississippi Conference, so it is a natural fit.”

Weill serves as administrative secretary to  the Rev. Sheila Cumbest in Ministerial Services.

Weill recently returned to Mississippi after living in Texas for several years. She grew up in the United Methodist Church, beginning in Biloxi at Epworth UMC, where her family was involved in Moore Community House. Her spiritual formative years were at St. John’s in Clinton UMC, where she taught children’s Sunday school and Vacation Bible School and played the piano for the church for a short period of time. Her parents continue their membership there.

Weill graduated from Mississippi College, and then left for Texas. She worked for many years as a buyer with both a global telecommunications company and a public school system in North Texas.

Smith returned to the conference staff April 1 after working a short time at Millsaps College. Smith had worked at the conference office for four years prior to her stint at Millsaps. She serves as administrative assistant to the conference treasurer and handles church receipts and apportionments.

Residents of Clinton, she and her family are members at Galloway Memorial United Methodist Church.
