Earnestine Varnado was one of 13 new deaconesses commissioned by The United Methodist Church April 5 at the semi-annual meeting of the General Board of Global Ministries. Two home missioners were also commissioned.
Varnado is the parish nurse at St. Andrew's Mission in McComb.
“I commission you to take the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ into all the world,” Bishop Joel N. Martinez of San Antonio, president of the mission agency, said as he and other clergy and laity laid their hands upon the heads of the women and men.
Home missioner is a new lay office for men, comparable to that of deaconess for women, approved by the 2004 United Methodist General Conference. Both are categories of lifetime lay mission service.
Deaconesses and home missioners are lay members of the annual conferences in which they serve. There are currently 119 persons in the deaconess/home missioner community. The 15 persons commissioned come from nine different annual conferences.
