United Methodist Women making prayer shawls

United Methodist Women in Mississippi and around the world are making prayer shawls as they prepare for UMW Assembly May 4-7 in Anaheim, Calif.

The soft, warm shawls can be knitted, crocheted or sewn. As shawls are finished, the unit and pastor pray over them.

All the shawls will be displayed at Assembly. After the event, the shawls will be given to persons who are ill, have suffered a loss or are in the midst of a crisis

There is no right or wrong way to create these gifts of love. They do not have to look alike nor be the same color. The patterns are simple and each shawl is one of a kind. For instructions for knitting or crocheting, see the February Beacon.

UMW Assembly is held every four years. To date, 26 women from Mississippi have registered to attend. Registration deadline is March 20, or before if seating capacity is met. Go to www.umwassembly.org for more information. “I would hope we would have 100 from Mississippi there,” said President Sarah Sanders.
