Lent offers time to help even more

As we move into the 40 days of Lent, we remember our brothers and sisters on the Gulf Coast who continue the long journey of renewal and recovery following Hurricane Katrina.

Thank you for the strong ways you have already responded in love and unity. You have sent teams, collected supplies, given generous offerings. We have almost $2 million available now to assist impacted congregations. A tremendous challenge continues as our churches’ uninsured and underinsured property losses resulting fro Katrina are more than $4 million.

I invite every church in the Mississippi Conference to receive offerings during Lent to help restore our churches impacted by Katrina. The membership of our annual conference is approximately 190,000. If every United Methodist in Mississippi gives $10 during Lent, we will immediately raise $1.9 million.  Opportunities for Lenten generosity abound, and I hope that you will invite offerings for this cause in Lenten worship while encouraging creativity of children, youth and adults.

It is in honor of the ministry of the Mississippi Conference that Mike and I offer a special Ash Wednesday gift for Katrina recovery.  We hope you will join us, persevering in this good work of recovery.

Thank you for all the ways you continue to share yourselves and your resources with others.  I give thanks for your partnership in every good work and look forward to amazing generosity as we journey through Lent toward Easter joy.
