Lenten offerings to aid rebuilding

During Lent, congregations have two opportunities to support the restoration of homes and churches damaged by Hurricane Katrina.

Bishop Hope Morgan Ward is asking every church in the Mississippi Conference to receive offerings during Lent to help restore churches impacted by Katrina.

“I give thanks for the strong ways you have already responded in love and unity: sending teams, collecting supplies, contributing financially. Due to your earlier generosity and contributions from outside the conference, we have nearly $2 million available now to assist impacted congregations,” said Ward.  “A tremendous challenge still lies before us: our churches’ uninsured and underinsured property losses resulting from Katrina are more than $4 million.

“If every Mississippi United Methodist gives $10 during Lent, we will immediately raise $1.9 million. Opportunities for Lenten generosity abound, and I hope that you will offer this opportunity in Lenten worship while encouraging creativity of children, youth, and adults.”
